Priest to Gangs Preaches Faith and Work
Jobs, not jails, will solve the country's entrenched gang problems, according to Fr. Greg Boyle, S.J. "G-Dog," as he is known in the neighborhoods of East Los Angeles where he works, spoke at Creighton about his work and what he has learned along the way.
Among other things, Boyle sees gang violence as rooted in hopelessness, which so often is about the lack of opportunities for inner-city youth. To combat that sense of despair, Boyle started Homeboy Ministries, which now employs 350 people in such businesses as Homeboy Bakery, Homeboy Silkscreen, Homeboy Maintenance, Homeboy Merchandise and Homegirl Café.
