Creighton Connection, e-news for parents of admitted students, Summer 2009

Course Registration

Registration information will be emailed to your child at his or her CUmail in early June. The information will include instructions for registration, links to information, the name and contact information of your child's advisor (Faculty Preceptor), and registration date, time and PIN number. He or she should hear from the faculty preceptor by phone or CU email prior to June 23, the first date of Web registration.

Registration Chat
Be sure to remind your child that we will have an online registration chat on June 17, 8 - 10 p.m. (CDT). Representatives will be on hand from Admissions and three undergraduate colleges (Arts & Sciences, Business and Nursing) to help answer any registration questions.

Payment Options

MET (Monthly Electronic Transfer) Plan
The MET Plan is a 10-month or 12-month payment plan offered by the Business Office. The payments are automatically deducted from a savings or checking account on the 10th of each month. There is a yearly fee for this service but no interest charge. Applications for MET were mailed earlier this month. For additional information you can e-mail the Business Office at busoffice@creighton.edu or call 402-280-2292.

NOTE: All tuition billing statements will be available on-line only through The NEST. Email notification will be sent to all students and their authorized users when new billing statements become available to view on-line.

Student Employment & Work Study
Student worker in an officeMany Creighton students work part-time on campus. These jobs can be Federal Work Study jobs, which are part of a student's financial aid package, or they can be Creighton University Employment, which does not require demonstration of financial need. Students who work 10 hours a week on campus can earn around $2,200 during the academic year.

Work study students will be contacted this summer by Therese McGrath, our Work Study coordinator. During Summer Preview they can complete pre-employment forms, enabling them to receive their job assignment in mid-August. Students can also complete these forms during Welcome Week.

Students who do not qualify for work study but are interested working part time can look at the Student Employment Office to find campus jobs. Students should check the site regularly as jobs become available throughout the year.

Eligibility
If your child plans to work on campus, he or she will need to demonstrate eligibility to work in the United States. Acceptable documents include Social Security card, birth certificate, or passport (only original documents are acceptable).

Enrolling Student Survey

Here at Creighton, we are always trying to improve the recruitment and admissions process. To do that, we have sent a survey to your child at his or her non-Creighton email to gather his or her opinion. Please remind your child to take 3 minutes to give us his or her thoughts on the experience of working with Creighton by June 12. Thanks for your help.

A friendly greeting awaits you at Summer Preview

Summer Preview

Don't miss our Summer Preview orientation program this July. At Summer Preview your child will meet other incoming freshmen while you meet their parents. Students will also meet one-on-one with an academic advisor. Plus, you will hear from key administrators in Academics, Residence Life, and Student Activities.

Tours are also offered during Summer PreviewParent Ann Fairbairn said, "It was a wonderful experience. I got to meet a lot of parents who have gone through sending their first child to school. I felt it really prepared me for what Creighton University has to offer and answered all my questions. After attending the summer preview program, my anxieties regarding sending my child away to school were put at ease."

At Summer Preview, your child can also take a proficiency test in a foreign language to test out of the foreign language requirement. Students with an ACT mathematics subscore below 24 can take a chemistry placement exam to be eligible to take Chemistry 203/204. Registration for either exam must be submitted by June 26th. These tests will also be available during Welcome Week.

We have a one-day preview session (July 14) and three two-day sessions (July 16 - 17, July 20 - 21 and July 23 - 24). Sessions can fill up, so be sure to register early.

Welcome Week

Car-side cookie delivery is provided by staff and volunteers.

Starting Sat., Aug. 22, Welcome Week is Creighton's official welcome to all new students. Each year Creighton moves in students living on campus while they and their families enjoy other on-campus programs. We hope you will truly see the spirit of Creighton in our students, faculty, staff, alumni and current parents.

Throughout the week, we will introduce new students to Creighton's holistic approach to education--focusing on the mind, body, and spirit--while helping them adjust to life at Creighton and in Omaha!

Current CU students help unload the van of an incoming student. If you are coming in from out of town, you may want to make your hotel reservations soon.

Depending on how far away you live from Creighton, you may be invited to move in early on Friday, August 21.

Authorized Users in The NEST

In the near future, you will likely want to keep track of your child's financial aid and other account information. You can do all this from your own account in the NEST. Your child only needs to authorize you to view his or her account. The first step is for your child to log into the NEST and go to the Student Services tab. While the process is self-explanatory, the Authorized User Login Instructions (.pdf) should help guide you through the steps.
